A nation of cowards

WASHINGTON -- Eric Holder, the nation's first black attorney general, said Wednesday the United States was "a nation of cowards" on matters of race, with most Americans avoiding candid discussions of racial issues.

In a speech to Justice Department employees marking Black History Month, Holder said the workplace is largely integrated but Americans still self-segregate on the weekends and in their private lives.

Is their something wrong with voluntary, self-segregation? Are black Americans who attend historically black universities (e.g., Howard University) "cowards"?

A fool's mouth is his ruin, and his lips are a snare to his soul. - Proverbs 18:7
Tomorrow, I'm sure we will be told what he "really" meant.

  1. Good point, Mike. Unfortunately, comments like Holder's are stale code for "white people need to change" and have nothing to do with "honest dialogue." Most white people by now realize that this mythical "honest dialogue" is just an excuse to brow beat whites and itemize their social and financial debts to blacks. In the process, the white guy is labeled ignorantly insensitive at best and racist at worst, if he doesn't toe the white man's line in this debate. As a former liberal, I used to believe in the "honest dialogue" and "the white man's to fault for everything" mantra until I realized through real life experience that most blacks and most liberal whites don't want discussion and progress, they just want a fight. I've enjoyed meeting a few exceptions along the way, but they are very few.

  2. Thanks for the post. I like to hear from folks who have been on the "other side" of issues and now have a different perspective. Your perspecive is much appreciated. Mike
